Illustrations of Miller's Views of the End of the World in 1843 - (Broadside)

: . . . . . New York farmer turned self taught preacher William Miller made an intensive study of the Bible and concluded that the end of the world would come in 1843. He convinced many people that he was correct and the faithful waited for the end, first in 1843, and then, after some relcaculations, again in 1844. Both times it failed to happen, but from Miller's theories and from his followers' faith there arose two American denominations - the Seventh-Day Adventists and the Advent Christians - along with some minor splinter groups (including the ill-fated Branch Davidians massacred in modern times by government agencies). This original broadside measuring ca. 32 by 25 inches was one of a number hawked in the streets by newsboys in the 1840s. It has eleven columns of type, a large illustration of the great day when it happens, and two sections entitled "Daniel's Visions" and "John's Visions" showing some quite remarkable creatures and other sights along with commentary. The broadside has been folded four times (into 16ths) but it has been stored in a loosely folded state in a box for many years so that fold and creasing damage has been minimized. The upper right corner has a narrow chip a few inches in length and there is some minor edgewear all around, nowhere even approaching the text. Several small brown stains at corners and edges indicate that at some point in time it was mounted by tape or paste to a wall but overall it is clean with a bit of dusting. An extremely scarce broadside of great importance to the history of American religious movements.. . . ISBN Number:. Keywords:[William, Miller, Millerites, Seventh, Day, Adventist, Advent, Christian]
