Bohn, Henry G.
A Guide to the Knowledge of Pottery, Porcelain, and other objects of vertu. Comprising an Illustrated Catalogue of the Bernal Collection of works of Art, with the prices at which they were sold at auction, and the names of the present possessors.

London; George Bell and Sons:1876. 3rd edition. First published in 1857, Bohn's work was for decades "the vade-mecum of dealers and collectors, who always referred to it before completing any transaction" (Solon). It provides a fascinating glimpse into the super-heated world of the ceramics collectors of the late 19th century, who were hotly competing for pieces of the best quality, often at very high prices. The contents include English and European ceramics, arms and armour, furniture, ivory, metalworks, pictures, some silver, a lot of fine antique European glass including Venetian and German glass, and other small decorative arts. It was the very fine pottery and porcelain, however, which dominated the sale. 5"x7.5", 504 pages, illustrated throughout with line illustrations; covers somewhat worn, rear hinge threadbare, and binding shaken, but overall a useful copy of a book which is usually found badly worn.
