Bigland, John.
Letters on the Study and Use of Ancient and Modern History.
Philadelphia; W.W. Woodward: 1814. Containing observations and reflections on the causes and consequences of those events which have produced conspicuous changes in the aspect of the world, and the general state of human affairs. With notes by the Rev. Jedediah Morse. First published in 1804, Bigland collected and summarized, for a popular audience, the sorts of history that had mainly been read by scholars. The first American printing was by Woodward in 1806. This appears to be the first American edition which contained Jedidiah Morse's notes, which from time to time gently chide "Mr. B" for being more of a historian than a theologian. Hardcover. 4.25"x7", 342 pages; bound in period calf with gilt spine rules and a red leather label; covers scuffed and somewhat worn, some internal soil and browning.
