Irving, Washington.
The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus.
New York; G.P. Putnam's Sons: 1868. Volume V of the Kinderhook Edition of Irving's works. Irving was an amazingly prolific writer, and there were several collected sets of his works in the 19th century with such Irving-ian names as the "Knickerbocker Edition", and the "Stuyvesant Edition". Most of them were like this -cheaply printed popular editions with imposing sounding names. But you can't beat the text- the story of the life and voyages of America's legendary discoverer and promoter, by the preeminent American historical writer of the 19th century. Hardcover, 2-volumes-in-1. 5.5"x8", 525 + 596 pages; steel-engraved frontispiece of Columbus charting his course. Bound, as issued, in red cloth with a leather spine with gilt medallions and chains. The covers are somewhat worn -the spine head is chipped, the spine is rubbed and scuffed; the spine base has a portion flaking away, as you can see in the picture; there is a little soil on the endpapers but the pages and plate are clean; the hinges are slightly shaky.
