James Franklin Gilman, nineteenth century painter.


Canaan; Phoenix Publishing: 1975. A late 19th-early 20th century New England landscape painter who began his career in Vermont and later moved to Massachusetts. "A solitary worker, he left some 300 paintings of New England farms, homes, fields and dooryards". Gilman was very active in the early Christian Science Church, was a close friend of Mary Baker Eddy, illustrated her book "Christ and Christmas", and illustrated and published the Church's calendars for several years. Hardcover. 9.5"x12.5", 159 pages, b/w and some color illustrations, dj; jacket with short tears and some soil, else a very nice copy.
