Blish, Helen H. & Amos Bad Heart Bull.
A Pictographic History of the Oglala Sioux.
Lincoln; University of Nebraska Press: 1967. An extremely important work, based on 400 drawings made by Amos Bad Heart Bull between 1890 and his death in 1913. In 1926 Helen H. Blish. "discovered" the drawings in the possession of his sister, Dollie Pretty Cloud, and began a project to analyze and interpret the history, which took her 13 years. During this period photographs were taken of the drawings, but they were never published. When Mrs. Pretty Cloud died in 1947 the drawings were buried with her, leaving the photographs, published here in their entirety for the first time, along with Mrs. Blish's analysis, the only extant record. Mari Sandoz wrote the Introduction. Hardcover. 9"x12", 530 pages, b/w and color illustrations; a fine copy, in a worn and somewhat soiled slipcase.
