Beadle, J.H.
Life in Utah; or, the Mysteries and Crimes of Mormonism....
Philadelphia; National Publishing Company: 1870. Beadle was author of several other histories of the American West. This is, in at least some ways, something of a serious (if extremely critical) history. In his preface Beadle attributes the success of the Mormons to their decision to concentrate in one geographic region, an act that gave them localized political power. He is probably quite correct, and possibly there is more to his criticism than simply a religious vendetta... The illustrations include a very nice plate of the "new" temple being built in Salt Lake City. Hardcover. 6"x9", 540 pages, b/w illustrations, folding map; original pebbled cloth; covers with some rubbing and wear, hinges shaken, rear hinge partially split; internal soil and some spotting.
