How To Find Things In PopShops
-- Browsing
Outside of Books & Print, the PopShops categories are exactly the same as in Popula's auctions. There are eight main non-book categories:
Art/Architecture – Look here mostly for visual arts (paintings, prints, photographs, real-photo postcards) and for craft items
Vintage/Designer – This contains mostly clothing and textile-related things, jewelry and accessories (handbags, belts, shoes, etc).
Erotica – Well, you know… You can't get in here without going through our warning page, so keep your password safe from your kids
Music – This is for vintage vinyl, CDs, and tapes as well as pop music memorabilia. Note that sheet music and other printed stuff can be found under Books – Art & Architecture
Hollywood – Anything film-related, such as posters, publicity stills, videos and movie memorabilia. There is a separate category under Books -–Art & Architecture for movie books.
The Home – This is for décor items, vintage kitchen stuff, and general tchotchke. There is also a category for pets' accessories.
Antiques & Collectibles – There is some overlap here with The Home, but vintage collectibles, kitsch, militaria and antiques are found here.
Miscellaneous – Anything that doesn't fit elsewhere goes here, including sports stuff and stamps & coins. There's even an ultimate catch-all in Miscellaneous - Etc. Browse here – you might find stuff you didn't even know you wanted!
In PopShops, we have vastly expanded our Books & Print categories. We've used as a model the Dewey Decimal system. We chose it mainly because it is (a) familiar to anyone who has ever spent much time hunting down books in libraries and (b) a great system for people who don't know exactly what book they are looking for but do know what subject area they are interested in.
We have used or adapted all the 10 main Dewey categories:
Domestic Arts This isn't actually a Dewey category, but we found it useful for books on cooking, fashion, and anything to do with the home, like interior decoration and DIY.
Art & Architecture This category ("The Arts" in Dewey) is pretty loosely defined. As well as formal art and architecture books, it can house books on photography, textile arts, ceramics, metalwork, games & gaming (including sports), and on other general cultural pursuits like drama and music both popular and classical.
Literature & Ephemera This category includes various subcategories of fiction as well as some general non-fiction categories like Biography & Genealogy. Here, also, are all ephemeral printed matter, like menus, advertisements, postcards, newspapers, magazines, journals, pamphlets, catalogues and the like.
Geography & History This is subdivided broadly into continents, with a more general section on Travel and History Reference
Knowledge This category includes First Editions & Rare Books as well as Manuscripts, Encyclopedias, Bibliographies, books on Journalism & Publishing and other broad general reference categories
Philosophy As well as philosophy, this includes psychology, the Occult, and various different branches of religion
Social Sciences & Business This includes politics and government as well as economics and various related categories like law, commerce, transportation, sociology, criminology, etc.
Language Foreign language books are to be found here in various different subcategories
Science & Math This category includes Pure (as opposed to Applied) Sciences.
Technology This category is for Applied Sciences, like Medicine, Agriculture and Ecology. In keeping with the Dewey system, it also includes categories that you might not think of as "technology" per se, like Accounting and Printing.
In order to make it easier for booksellers who haven't yet had time to sort their inventory into our categories, we've also included an eleventh main category, General Interest. If you don't find what you're looking for in the other categories, try browsing here.
Please bear in mind when browsing, that some books could with equal reason go in more than one category. For instance, Sherlock Holmes could justifiably be put in Mystery/Suspense or in Literary Fiction; and a book on stock market investing might appear in Economics or Business & Management or Commerce & Trade. Hence, if you don't find what you're looking for in one category, try visiting all the other possible categories your book might reasonably be placed in.
-- Searching
If you know exactly what you're looking for, the best way to find it is through our Search page. Here, you can search by Title/Headline as well as by Author or by Any Other Word. You need not type in an exact phrase -- it searches by word, not by phrase -- and everything is assumed to be lower case. Search terms should be separated by spaces.
For books, the author will generally be found in the Author / Manufacturer / Designer field. For non-book categories, though, this field will be used for names like Betsey Johnson, Baccarat, Descoware, or any number of other words describing the creator or maker of the item. Please don't assume, though, that the seller has remembered to put anything in this optional field. If you don't find what you're looking for by searching this field, try putting the keyword in the "Any Other Words" box (see below).
For non-books, the Title field is a general Headline field containing the words under which the item was listed. Hence, you might look here for "catcher rye" (to find Catcher In The Rye) as well as for, say, "scarf", "vase" or "toaster".
The Any Other Words box initiates searches of the item's Seller (Popula username) field, as well as the Summary and Description fields. Hence, for instance, if you want to search for any item by a particular seller, put his username in this box. Note that searches in this box may take a little longer than in the other boxes, since the system has to search through many more words to find what you're looking for.
Finally, don't forget: if you don't find it in PopShops, it might still be in the regular Popula auctions. Please use the lower boxes on the Search page for searches of our auctions.
We hope you find what you seek here and elsewhere, esteemed, and thank you for using Popula.
